odinsblog:

A Bronx bus company is offering tours billed as a “a ride through a real New York City ‘GHETTO,’” the New York Post reports.

The company, Real Bronx Tours, has taken largely white foreign tourists around the Bronx. The tour guide was caught mocking the Bronx by Post reporter Candice Giove.

Three times a week, Real Bronx Tours takes riders — mainly white Europeans and Australians — on a trip that includes stops at food-pantry lines and a “pickpocket” park.

“Last week, on the first stop of the $45 tour, guide Lynn Battaglia, from Pittsburgh, pointed out a housing project. She then mocked the Grand Concourse, modeled after a Parisian boulevard,” reports Giove.“‘Do you feel like we’re on the Champs-Elysées?’ she teased a couple from Paris.”

The tour also included a drive near a food pantry at a church. Battaglia wondered out loud, “I don’t know what that line’s about, but every Wednesday we see it. We see them go in with empty carts, and we see them come out with carts full.

The tour guide warned of the dangers of going to a park in the Bronx and also gave inaccurate information about the origin of the word “pig” to describe a police officer. While Battaglia claimed the word came from the Bronx, in reality it originated in London.

The Bronx borough president harshly criticized the guide and the tour.

The guide is “the biggest fool on the planet,” said Ruben Diaz, the borough president. “To have foreigners come and gawk at a long line of people who are less fortunate than they are and to make money off of that and to view them as they are some sort of entertainment is pretty disgusting.” [emphasis mine]

This is a total diss to my hometown. Ugh the Bronx is many things, but there is beauty there…and I’m happy I spent a good chunk of my childhood there.

It’s irritating to see these dumb ass tourists come to my city and mock it for their enjoyment and someone is getting paid to be a racist/classist asshole.

They’re taking a tour of the projects like it’s a zoo. Like it’s a fucking exhibit. SMH.

And this ladies and gents is why almost everyone hates/doesnt trust white people. You see people who are misfortunate, and poor and marginalized and you dehumanize them even more by treating them like animals in a freaking petting zoo. This is white supremacy, this is classism, this is racism. This isnt ok.

Good fucking god

Good

Fucking

God

I am going to look in the other direction because my blood pressure can’t take shit

and i hope they get their asses kicked every single time they show up.

rebloggable version by request.

And the thing is I don’t think white people care, like they treat it like it’s only a problem if you choose to look at it that way. I had a friend ask what was all the trouble with the “perceived whitewashing” in Star Trek recently. And when I said people get sick of having their race villified and minimized into nonimportance/nonexistance in film. Khan should have been played by any number of Indian actors by which Benadryl Crumblypants shut them out. To which she siad it wasn’t her place to speak on and changed the subject. Like, do they not think these are real issues, do they think we make this shit up? I wonder how nice it must be to so illusiolned.

around this time last year people finally started taking notice of the food-related issues in the upper northern reaches of Canada; consider this your reminder that even since then, juice is still $26 in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, and that the predominately indigenous communities in Canada’s North are forced to pay extraordinarily exorbitant prices for basic groceries due to structural inequity and the contemporary effects of ongoing settler occupation.

They were introduced to the region via the Napoleonic code and the codification and the severe hollowing out of the shar‘ia in modern history. For example abortion, long considered a question of women’s rights in the Western world due its twinned history with Catholicism and Christianity more broadly, was not illegal across the Arab world until the rise of the nation state. Some traditions of fiqh continue take a position on abortion that American feminists might wish could be extended to the United States today. In addition, jurists have and do struggle to understand and promote “progressive” notions of male and female relations and to make room for nonconforming gender persons in the region. In fact, scholars such as Paula Sanders have shown us that several centuries ago Islamic jurists were developing a system of accommodation for hermaphrodites and nonbinary gendered peoples in Islamic communities.”

-
-Maya Mikdashi, in her article How Not to Study Gender in the Middle East.

Out of the tragedy of the massive garment factory collapse in Bangladesh, workers have now won two major reforms:

1) A panel to raise the minimum wage in the garment industry and

2) The right to form trade unions without prior permission from factory owners.

Still, more pressure—and responsibility—need to be placed upon America’s big-brand companies to win further protections.

There’s a person I follow who’s not on right now that I’d LOVE to direct…

My point is that the major civil rights movements of this century were inspired and used Gandhi’s techniques. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela used his techniques. The reason why groups like Al Qaeda and the Taliban will never succeed is because violence only begets more violence. You cannot force people to change because it is not just. The change you instill will eventually be rebelled against because it was not gained through just means. Malala Yousafzai will succeed because she is a real fighter, in that she is willing to face the threat of death and live, while the Taliban will lose because they have lowered themselves to attacking schoolgirls. Even if Gandhi’s methods were “flawed”, they still WORKED. The methods were undertaken voluntarily, and Gandhi succeeded because the people were behind him. You cannot change society without first changing the hearts and minds of the people, and you cannot do that through violence.

Yes, but what if i were to tell you that non-violence actually didn’t put an end to violence, but only made people step it up in order to obscure it. Institutional Racism still exists. So does Systemic oppression of all sorts. And you cannot change the heart of someone who has no heart or capacity to change in the first place. That was my initial point.

Also the fact that people have to sacrifice their lives in order to make change MAY sound noble, but when you think about it, it’s still not the best idea. I’m not saying that Ghandi was absolutely wrong, but if you have to die in order to invoke sympathy from people, how much sympathy does that person really have?

And at the end of the day, I will always value someone’s self-persevation over nobility any day. If you feel like you need to hang on to justified anger in order to make it rather than swallowing emotions down, then so be it. in the long run, I want my folks to survive, and if yelling is the way to do it, so be it.

Tumblr PoC Movie Productions Presents: That Post Shouldn't have gotten Popular

Tumblr PoC Movie Productions Presents: That Post Shouldn't have gotten Popular

They’ve always said that the thing about Ghandi was that his belief that you should suffer until people feel empathy for you was flawed because there are still so many lives being lost… I can’t exactly phrase it the way they said it, but that was the gist of what they said.
Ami Angelwings:

What scares me about the comments/reactions to Steubenville articles (and this is not unique to this, it pops up all the time about rape) is just how important it is for people that a girl/woman being drunk must be “punished” (TW in link). That’s at the core of a lot of this, the idea that if we make rape of unconscious people a crime, then there’s no “consequences” to girls drinking a lot/being slutty/etc… Rape as corrective tool is at the heart of a lot of rape culture attitudes, including that prisoners deserve to be raped, rape to punish/fix queer people (“rape you straight”, etc), rape as a tool of torture, rape as part of ‘hazing’, and that women who are “bad” (sex workers, “slutty”, drink a lot, wear few clothes, etc) deserve “consequences” for their behavior. Behind a lot of rape apologia is the undercurrent of “but if we stop this, how will these people get punished for acting against how I think they should?”

Oh hay, stuff I wrote a while back on my Rants blog is on tumblr! :3 I’ll just reblog it. >_>

Ill bite.

But i need one bit of clarification.

What is meant by nice? Is nice non violent?

Nice is not exactly defined as non-violent, because when non-violence was being done, it WAS registered as psychological terror on oppressors. What we see as non-violence today was SCARY AND BOLD AS FUCK when it was happening back then, and thinking about it, it’s still scary now.

Nice is defined as the set of respectability politics that DEMANDS an abusive version of non-violence that lets you get kicked down without being able to fight back; but ONLY restricts it to that. The “nice” that is talked about requires you to hide your anger and smother it, and refuses to let you to fight back. The “nice” I refer to referrers to thinking that you can say anything oppressive as long as you’re “rational” and marks justified anger as “irrational” That is what I mean by nice.

I hope this helps.

youngist:

Three years ago, Bruno Mars became a worldwide superstar with a string of smash hits. But before that, he struggled for years to make it, and reveals that one of the barriers to his becoming a pop star was his race.

Bruno is Puerto Rican, Jewish and Filipino. In the cover story of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, he says that when he and his songwriting partners came up with a song called “Nothin’ on You,” Bruno figured it was his ticket to the big time. But when he brought it to a music industry decision-maker — a guy he won’t name — the reaction shocked him.

“He goes, ‘Oh man, oh man, what a song,’” recalls Bruno. But then, he says the guy told him, “You know what kind of white artist we could break with this? Blond hair, blue eyes, we could make this kid the next thing!”

“It was just kinda sad,” Bruno tells EW. “It was like, ‘Man, what about the kid that played you the song and wrote it and produced it…what about that guy?’”

That experience, Bruno said, made him feel like a “mutant,” and he says that was his lowest point. “Even with that song in my back pocket to seal the deal, things like that are coming out of people’s mouths. It made me feel like I wasn’t even in the room.”

Thankfully, the story has a happy ending. “Nothin’ on You” went on to become a #1 hit for Bruno and rapper B.o.B. It was nominated for three Grammys, and it launched Bruno on what’s became one of the hottest pop careers of the decade.

Look you guys post-racial!!!!
